A Drug that Lowers Cholesterol
Actually Plugs Up Your Arteries

A clinical trial of Zetia, a cholesterol-lowering drug prescribed to about one million people a week, failed to show that the drug has any medical benefits.  This was recently announced by the two pharmaceutical companies that actually make the drug, Merck and Schering-Plough.

Zetia is usually combined with another cholesterol drug called Zocor, one of the many “statin drugs” on the market, in a single pill called Vytorin. About 60 percent of patients who take Zetia do so in the form of Vytorin.

While Zetia does lower cholesterol by 15% to 20% in most patients, no trial has ever shown that it can reduce heart attacks and strokes — or even that it reduces the growth of the fatty deposits in arteries that can cause heart problems.

This trial was designed to show that Zetia could reduce the growth of those plaques. Instead, the plaques actually grew almost twice as fast in patients taking Zetia along with Zocor, than in those taking Zocor alone.

But, is using any “statin drug” to lower your cholesterol safe?

Unfortunately, statin drugs have been shown to cause neuropathy (nerve damage). Statin drugs have also been shown to cause (to a lesser degree) side effects such as memory loss, muscle pain, weakness, fatigue, and the breakdown of muscle tissues resulting in the release of muscle tissue contents into the bloodstream, a potentially fatal muscle disease.

Now there is a new way to lower cholesterol levels, nutritionally, without causing nerve damage or other additional health problems, and it’s easy to do.
