In 1937, the Nobel Prize for medicine was awarded to the father of nutritional science, Dr. Albert Szent Gyorgyi, for discovering Vitamin C. He was the first scientist to isolate the active ingredient in oranges and limes.  It was known that these fruits cured scurvy, which was a common disease of sailors during the 19th century.

After conducting additional research at the University of Szeged in Hungary, the doctor was astonished.  He discovered that although scurvy patients did recover when they when given the chemically isolated form of vitamin C (ascorbic acid), it was not as effective as his crude plant extracts. Dr. Szent Gyorgyi realized that by converting down to the chemically isolated ascorbic acid that something important was being lost.

He continue to pursue the answer to this mystery and, as a result, he discovered bioflavonoids, which are an important part of the story. But that was only the beginning of over sixty years of scientific research.

Researchers finally found the answer and it confirmed Hippocrate's (Greek physician regarded as the father of medicine) ancient wisdom from 400 B.C. in which he stated,
"Let food be your medicine, let your medicine be your food."

The 1999 Nobel Prize for Medicine

In 1999, Dr. Gunter Blobel was awarded a Nobel Prize for his research when he discovered the exact mechanisms of how nutrients are transported into the cells of our bodies.

He discovered this amazing information after spending 20 years researching just one question, "How do proteins know where to go in the body?"

It was discovered that nutrients inside food are bound by many other essential elements, such as proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids (fats), which are called carrier co-factors.
